Stephen Hawking floats on a zero-gravity jet.

(AP Photo/Zero Gravity Corp.)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - Free of his wheelchair and tethered only to heart rate and blood pressure monitors, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking fulfilled a dream Thursday of floating weightless on a zero-gravity jet, a step he hopes leads to further space adventures.

"It was amazing," Hawking said after the flight. The modified jet carrying Hawking, a handful of his physicians and nurses and dozens of others first flew up to 7,315 metres over the Atlantic off Florida. Nurses lifted Hawking and carried him to the front of the jet, where they placed him on his back atop a special foam pillow.

The jet then climbed to around 9,754 metres and made a parabolic dive back to 7,315, allowing Hawking and the other passengers to experience weightlessness for about 25 seconds.

Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He is known for his contributions to the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity, especially in the context of black holes, and his popular works in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general. These include the runaway popular science bestseller A Brief History of Time, which stayed on the British Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.

His key scientific works to date have included providing, with Roger Penrose, theorems regarding singularities in the framework of general relativity, and the theoretical discovery that black holes emit radiation, which is today known as Hawking radiation (or sometimes as Bekenstein-Hawking radiation). His scientific career spans more than 40 years and his books and public appearances have made him an academic celebrity and world-renowned theoretical physicist. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Apple Computers - OS X Patch

Apple Megapatch Fixes 25 Vulnerabilities

Twelve of the bugs being patched enable remote code execution, which is generally considered a critical flaw.

By Sharon Gaudin Information Week April 20, 2007 01:54 PM

"Apple late Thursday issued a megapatch that fixes 25 security vulnerabilities on its Mac OS X desktop and OS X server systems. Twelve of the vulnerabilities being patched would enable remote code execution, which is generally considered to be a "critical" bug in security circles. Several other bugs enable users to advance their system privileges without authorization. "

Time Travel - Michio Kaku

The Physics of Time Travel Is it real, or is it fable?

By Michio Kaku

"In H.G. Wells' novel, The Time Machine, our protagonist jumped into a special chair with blinking lights, spun a few dials, and found himself catapulted several hundred thousand years into the future, where England has long disappeared and is now inhabited by strange creatures called the Morlocks and Eloi. That may have made great fiction, but physicists have always scoffed at the idea of time travel, considering it to be the realm of cranks, mystics, and charlatans, and with good reason."

"Interestingly enough, Stephen Hawking once opposed the idea of time travel. He even claimed he had “empirical” evidence against it. If time travel existed, he said, then we would have been visited by tourists from the future. Since we see no tourists from the future, ergo: time travel is not possible. Because of the enormous amount of work done by theoretical physicists within the last 5 years or so, Hawking has since changed his mind, and now believes that time travel is possible (although not necessarily practical). (Furthermore, perhaps we are simply not very interesting to these tourists from the future. Anyone who can harness the power of a star would consider us to be very primitive. Imagine your friends coming across an ant hill. Would they bend down to the ants and give them trinkets, books, medicine, and power? Or would some of your friends have the strange urge to step on a few of them?)

Einstein: His Life and Universe - Walter Isaacson

By Walter Isaacson

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly"Acclaimed biographer Isaacson examines the remarkable life of "science's preeminent poster boy" in this lucid account (after 2003's Benjamin Franklin and 1992's Kissinger). Contrary to popular myth, the German-Jewish schoolboy Albert Einstein not only excelled in math, he mastered calculus before he was 15. Young Albert's dislike for rote learning, however, led him to compare his teachers to "drill sergeants." That antipathy was symptomatic of Einstein's love of individual and intellectual freedom, beliefs the author revisits as he relates his subject's life and work in the context of world and political events that shaped both, from WWI and II and their aftermath through the Cold War. Isaacson presents Einstein's research—his efforts to understand space and time, resulting in four extraordinary papers in 1905 that introduced the world to special relativity, and his later work on unified field theory—without equations and for the general reader. Isaacson focuses more on Einstein the man: charismatic and passionate, often careless about personal affairs; outspoken and unapologetic about his belief that no one should have to give up personal freedoms to support a state. Fifty years after his death, Isaacson reminds us why Einstein (1879–1955) remains one of the most celebrated figures of the 20th century. 500,000 firsr printing, 20-city author tour, first serial to Time; confirmed appearance on Good Morning America."Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The Angel Inside: Michelangelo's Secrets For Following Your Passion and Finding the Work You Love

By Chris Widener

Book Description

The break-out business parable that’s already sold more than 70,000 copies, The Angel Inside tells the story of a young man searching for meaning in his work and finding it in an unlikely place: the life and art of Michelangelo.

"You will want to re-read this book as soon as you are finished. This makes the quick read of this book a true advantage. Chris Widener has done a great job of tying together the new and the old to come up with a powerful message that is just as valid today as it was in Michelangelo's time.

I was going to name the principles that resonated the most with me but instead I encourage you to read this book and find your favorites for yourself.
This is a great book to pick-up and read over and over again and I know it will make you smile each time."
